Change and Benefits

A company I was with for several years went through a major structural change. They “upgraded” everyone’s job descriptions along with their credential criteria, which basically meant everyone was laid off and had to reapply once more to their own positions. Some of the staff members I supported did not have these higher credentials, so were extremely stressed about their situation, especially finances.

As my career was in the temple and any work outside of it was secondary, I could see things objectively from both sides. The new structure along with its procedures and higher-level staff were definitely daunting, however, it also promised better and more efficient service for our members in the long run.

I created the card above for two of my coworkers, both very different in nature. One despaired and ended up not being rehired. The other (who was a single parent of a small child and had just purchased a new house) was encouraged and persevered to get her credentials. Not only did she end up getting re-hired to her “new” position, but with higher credentials came higher pay and better benefits, including better retirement benefits. She was very happy, relieved, and grateful she decided to endure.

Changing all the time with little thought or cause, or pure emotional reaction leaves no room for development or growth. However, changes that come with deep reflection, careful observation, and planning of the future will be of great benefit. Balancing patience with active preparation is key to bringing about and seeing benefits any change life can bring.

Have you had an experience where a change you thought was going to be terrible turned out to be beneficial in the end?
